The competition gives the romance a schedule: rounds to survive, a rival to out-pipe, a sabotage that is never quite proven. Somebody's grandmother's recipe wins, and somebody who swore they were only there to judge ends up elbow-deep in fondant by the final round. We have never once been surprised, and we have never once turned it off.
